Your blog sucks. And your work. And probably mine too.
Have you read this article over on Design Observer, Frank? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it…kind of piqued my interest. —Brooke RaneWarning: This blog post is hasty and curmudgeonly. There are naughty swears and general playground banter.
I read it. Then I finished. And I thought, “Wait, so the author wrote an article about setting up a place for commentary online instead of actually doing it? You have a word processor. You’re posting this on a blog, so you have the capacity. Why not set it up?” There’s some criticism. Granted, there are lots of variables here, but why not? Ms Lange seems to have the clout, expertise and experience, being published in such fine publications as Metropolis, New York Magazine and the New York times. Maybe she is setting up the blog as we speak. I’d be excited, because I know I’d like for this site to exist. I’d read it, and I have 10 or so sites in my RSS reader, because I think a lot of sites out there aren’t very good at all.
On Criticism
Lange says the design sites online are too rosey. I’d be inclined to agree. Still, I moderate myself under the pretense of biting the hand that feeds me. I’ve greatly benefitted from my work being featured on design blogs. I get jobs from it. But, please. Blogs: stop posting the same damn kinds of work over and over. No more fake movie posters, faux book covers, posting half-assed design work just because it’s letterpressed, novel ad campaigns or animated gifs. Delete any post tagged with cute.
